  • Improper painting

I’m kind of accidentally experimenting with sort of a reverse painting technique where the colors come first and the drawing comes next. If this were done in the proper way, the drawing would definitely come first, then I’d pick up my box of Crayolas and color in between the lines. But this is, of course,…

  • Bonnard’s ghost

I rediscovered — and am in the process of rediscovering — Pierre Bonnard. Something about the way his figures have a supporting role in the painting rings true for me. No starring roles here, folks, just co-stars. This one’s for you, PB.

A new painting arrived today via the painting stork. It’s a girl! About 8 ounces. 8 x 6 inches. Acrylic on acrylic on acrylic on watercolor paper on watercolor paper.

I’m starting a new mini-series with Ruby as the inspiration. Ruby is one of my all time favorite little paintings. Here’s Ruby Blue, acrylic on paper, 7 x 5 inches.

  • After a 2-month break on this painting for a soul-inspiring trip to New Orleans, this painting is now underway. Again. Part of my process is that just when I think I’m finished, I go back in to fix something or make it better. Just a quick little change, I tell myself. Shouldn’t take more than…

  • Scullery digging

I recently visited my dad and Caci in Florida and took this photo. I painted this several years ago when I was doing mostly figures. After the figures the easels, windows, doors, and floors took over for a long while. Now, I’m circling back around and, as you may have noticed, re-introducing figures into the…

  • Waiting in the wings

This painting came out of a conversation between Melissa, Carol Robinson, and me. Collaboration is a wonderful thing!

The best state might be State 3

  • Let the printing begin!

Here’s what the block looks like fully carved. … and here’s a view of some of the printed cards. Cut, carve, gouge, slice, nick, nick, nick! (That’s the sound of the linocut carving in progress.) G strings for Christmas… along with E, A, D, and B. And the dogs go, “Woooooooo!” I finished the drawing…

  • HG4

I just put the finishing touches on the fourth houseghost. One of my favorite parts is the plant, of all things. Time for a Kaliber.

  • Journaling 101

In June the Treasure Valley Artists’ Alliance held a panel discussion on journaling. The artists on the panel included Melissa ‘Sasi’ Chambers, Lisa Cheney, Pam McKnight, Terry Burkes, Jeanette Ross, and Beau van Greener, moderated by Dr. Kathleen Keyes. The “Aha!” moment for me happened when each of the artists on the panel talked about…

  • Here’s the latest houseghost progression. For the past few paintings I’ve been trying out a new technique — creating a black/white/gray image first, then overlaying color. What I’ve discovered is that oftentimes the intermediate steps are fine and could be finished images all on their own.

Study in black and white and ghostly

Angels on Bikes is an online magazine featuring my art, some very unscientific experiments and a few stories that’ll make you go hmm?
