I rediscovered — and am in the process of rediscovering — Pierre Bonnard. Something about the way his figures have a supporting role in the painting rings true for me. No starring roles here, folks, just co-stars. This one’s for you, PB.

A new painting arrived today via the painting stork. It’s a girl! About 8 ounces. 8 x 6 inches. Acrylic on acrylic on acrylic on watercolor paper on watercolor paper.

Here’s the next installment in the Ruby series, Ruby Too Blue. She’s as bright as Sunday morning sunshine.

Here’s the second installment of my new mini-series inspired by Ruby.

I’m starting a new mini-series with Ruby as the inspiration. Ruby is one of my all time favorite little paintings. Here’s Ruby Blue, acrylic on paper, 7 x 5 inches.

After a 2-month break on this painting for a soul-inspiring trip to New Orleans, this painting is now underway. Again. Part of my process is that just when I think I’m finished, I go back in to fix something or make it better. Just a quick little change, I tell myself. Shouldn’t take more than…

I recently visited my dad and Caci in Florida and took this photo. I painted this several years ago when I was doing mostly figures. After the figures the easels, windows, doors, and floors took over for a long while. Now, I’m circling back around and, as you may have noticed, re-introducing figures into the…

This painting came out of a conversation between Melissa, Carol Robinson, and me. Collaboration is a wonderful thing!

I just put the finishing touches on the fourth houseghost. One of my favorite parts is the plant, of all things. Time for a Kaliber.

In June the Treasure Valley Artists’ Alliance held a panel discussion on journaling. The artists on the panel included Melissa ‘Sasi’ Chambers, Lisa Cheney, Pam McKnight, Terry Burkes, Jeanette Ross, and Beau van Greener, moderated by Dr. Kathleen Keyes. The “Aha!” moment for me happened when each of the artists on the panel talked about…

Here’s the latest houseghost progression. For the past few paintings I’ve been trying out a new technique — creating a black/white/gray image first, then overlaying color. What I’ve discovered is that oftentimes the intermediate steps are fine and could be finished images all on their own.

This houseghost took six weeks to fully form. Here’s a little slideshow of the many phases of Jo the Houseghost. Cast your vote for which point in the painting I should have stopped fiddling with it!

Nobody’s really sure where they come from. Probably Portland. Or Boise’s North End.

This is the painting that’s been on my easel for the past two weeks. The first phase was all black and white and Payne’s Gray. Now I’m adding color through glazes. It’s very slow going, very meditative, and tons of fun, actually. This technique was used over 500 years ago and I’m not quite sure…

Every weekend, I take Sirius to the Dutch Bros. drive through and get treats for everyone in the household. Here are the in process pictures of the newest houseghost painting with her breve latte. (Some have been Instagrammed, so that means I played around with the filters and effects.)
