    Collage shenanigans: Princess Feather Hat
  • I rediscovered this collage last week when I needed an image to announce TVAA‘s new community post page. The idea was to promote a new feature that gives visual artists a way to post their own announcements on the site. As often happens when designing a visual hook for a TVAA post my first impulse is…

  • The next show by the Treasure Valley Artists’ Alliance is called “Metamorphosis,” opening in March. I haven’t ever made a triptych and I haven’t told a story in my work in years. So, I thought I’d tackle both and make one last collage before returning to painting. This piece focuses pretty obviously on spirituality. Well,…

  • I’m kinda gettin’ into the collage thing. It could be just a phase, but I have found it to be a great way — on so many levels — to spend time in the studio. Putting together a collage makes me think differently and faster about composition because it’s so easy to change the balance…

  • I’m just having a great time working on collages. It started with wanting to do something fun, and I revived the Princess Feather Hat image. When my daughter Lina was visiting over Christmas, she and I made collages together and I finished the second Princess F.H.  This weekend I worked on the third in the…

  • One of my favorite ways to have fun with art is to make a collage. I found the first Princess Feather Hat in my studio under some watercolors and thought it was the perfect image to inspire a new series. So, here’s the second incarnation of the princess. To tell you the God’s Honest Truth,…

  • I’ve got 3 words for ya

These collages were made for an upcoming show called “Text Messages” that the Treasure Valley Artists’ Alliance is putting on at Boise State Public Radio in January.  I don’t know if they’ll be accepted in the show, but I thought you might like to see a preview of my first text-based art.

It’s not really much of a story.  I was just sitting in the studio getting my butt kicked by an insanely tough collage and the Genie came a-knockin’.  Coming out of the bottle in a big puff is no longer the scene for these guys.  So, anyhoo, I asked for a little help.  Here’s wish 1.

  • Lina’s lines

Lina came over to the house last night and we had a great daddy/daughter moment talking about this collage and trying a few things.  She took the driver’s seat and solved a visual problem we were having with the wavy lines on the left.  Collaboration has its rewards!

  • Collage 101

Step 1: dump all your supplies onto the table. Step 2: throw stuff together till it looks like a door and a floor. Step 3: take away all the pieces that aren’t helping. Step 4: use glue on the parts you want to keep.  Use the fan on its highest speed to deal with the rest. Step 5: Done! A…

Yes, it is time to make a collage.  High time. Step 1 for making a collage: take a picture of all your collage stuff.
